Before & After: The Dining Room Gets Subdued Restyling

Although the dining room is in no way finished – we still need dining chairs, a sideboard or buffet, new window treatments and some other finishing touches – it has definitely seen a lot of improvement over the past couple of months. Here’s a peek at how the room has come together so far…

I just discovered that I hadn’t posted a photo of the dining room in the first house tour so this is probably your first time seeing it. When we took possession of the house back in November the dining room was two colors – bright egg yolk yellow on the lower part and an eggplant-y purple above the picture rail. As with all the other rooms, I covered up the bright hues with a subtle gray.

The new paint color made a world of difference in the room. As I think I’ve said before, I don’t begrudge anyone their love of colors, but for our Dream House I want the walls to recede into the background rather than stand out like the colorful star of the show. The new subtle color scheme always makes the room feel larger and more modern.

In addition to changing the paint color, I also switched out the thermostat. Although I upgraded the thermostat for practical reasons – the new Nest thermostat can be controlled remotely via smartphone – I also really like the styling of the replacement.

I brought home the secondhand $29 dining table last week and have been playing around with placement ever since. At least once I day I flip the table around from being parallel to the wall of the windows to perpendicular. I still can’t decide which way I like it best. I’m sure that replacing the folding chairs with permanent dining chairs will inform the decision. As will bringing more furniture into the room.

This is quickly becoming my favorite room. Despite having a big old house, I often find myself sitting at the dining table, hunched over my laptop or reading magazines. I suspected this would be the case. When we’ve had homes with dining rooms in the past, we’ve usually used the dining table as the center of operations.

I’m looking forward to adding the finishing touches to the dining room. I’ve been a bit stumped on window treatments but I think I’ve finally gotten that figured out. And it looks like I may have found at least two secondhand chairs to replace the folding chairs. Slowly but surely it’s coming together. Like a jigsaw puzzle, I must remain patient while I find all the pieces.
