In all our years together as a cohabiting couple, Mr. Blandings and I have only owned one new sofa. It was a cheap “leather” sofa that we didn’t exactly love but it was in our price range and we were in a rush to furnish an apartment. Within two years of owning it, the leather on the cheap imported sofa started to crack and split. If you know anything about it leather, you know that it’s not supposed to crack. That our leather sofa turned out to be “leatherette” shouldn’t have surprised us. At just over $500 new, of course it wasn’t made with real leather. In addition to shoddy materials, it was also one of the most uncomfortable sofas to ever grace my behind. We sold that cheap, cracking sofa on Craigslist a few years ago and, with limited space in our tiny apartment, we’ve been living without one ever since…
Now that it’s time to furnish the dream house, we’re looking at sofas again. While we plan to furnish the house almost exclusively with vintage and secondhand furniture, we want to invest in a brand new sofa. But even though we won’t be buying vintage, we still want to honor our goal of keeping the dream house furnishings as local and organic as possible. If we’re going to splurge on a new sofa, we want it to be made in the United States.
It may surprise you to learn how many furniture companies still have factories in the US. From major brands you’re sure to recognize to smaller companies you may not know, here’s a list of American-made sofas:
BUDGET (UNDER $1,000)
- La-Z-Boy – They’re more than just recliners, you know. La-Z-Boy makes a range of affordable sofas in their factory in Dayton, Tennessee.
- Flexsteel – Based in Louisville, Kentucky, Flexsteel offers a wide range of styles and price points.
- Club Furniture – This is a great resource for nicely styled sofas that are made in the US but can still be picked up for less that $1,000.
- CoolSofa.com – Very budget priced sofas that are made in California.
MID-RANGE ($1,000+)
- Pottery Barn – A great place for casual sofas, many of which are made in the USA.
- Thrive Home Furnishings – Fans of mid-century styling will love these Los Angeles-made sofas.
- Crate & Barrel – Crate has a pretty diverse range of sofa styles made in the States.
- Rowe Furniture – In addition to being American made, Rowe also has an eco-friendly line of sofas.
- Decades – Owned by the very handsome couple, Roger (of “Sell This House” fame) and Chris Hazard, Decades’ sofas are custom built in North Carolina. I’m particularly in love with the Johhny.
- Carolina Chair – As their name suggests, this company’s casually-styled sofas are made in North Carolina.
- Arhaus – Another North Carolina manufacturer, with a range of sofa styles and sizes.
- Stephen Daniel Editions – Pretty affordable and made in the State since 1966.
- West Elm – Some of West Elm’s sofas, like the Lorimer, are made in the United States.
- Simplicity Sofas – Based in North Carolina, this company specializes in sofas for smaller spaces.
HIGH END ($2,000+)
- Lee Industries – Sofas from Lee Industries are not just made in America, they consist of 90% US-sourced components.
- Brandington Young – A division of Hooker Furniture, with conservative styling.
- Baker Furniture – From casual to luxury, Baker’s sofas are handcrafted by furniture craftsmen.

- Harden Furniture – A fifth-generation company, Harden’s sofas are made in New York.
- Norwalk Furniture – Custom crafted furniture that’s made in Ohio.
- American Leather – Their name might suggest otherwise, but American leather also stocks upholstered sofas.

Thank you so much for the information on made in America Furniture! Your house is beautiful by the way. Just an FYI the links to Jeffco and Flexsteel are not working anymore. I will pass this site on….
what about Klaussner ?
Simplicity Sofas, LaZBoy and Flexsteel really don’t belong in the under $1000 price category. The vast majority of their sofas and sleepers ares above that price range, although chairs and recliners are probably below.
Lazeboy now outsources outside U.S.
I believe Franklin furniture is still made in the USA in Houston, MS. Can anyone tell me anything about the quality?
I own a Franklin sectional. They are still american made inin Mississippi with very high quality. I find it way more comfortable than our previous flexsteel!
Not all Flexsteel is made in the USA. Southern Motion is though and they are not even listed.
Room & Board sofas are also made in the US.
We were led to believe that our Flexsteel sofa was to be made in America but when we requested to track it, we were told that it was being manufactured in Mexico and nearly a month later, we still have not taken delivery.
There is a 6 year old firm in Los Angeles that makes it furniture there. Apt2B.
What about Stanton Sofas – aren’t they made in Portland, OR?
USA Premium Leather. It’s a silly name but they’re based in SLC and make furniture in both Utah and North Carolina. We just bought a sofa from them and are extremely impressed.
Can you post a picture? I’m looking for quality made USA leather sofa for a Farmhouse/coastal relaxed home
Smith Brothers if Berne, made in Berne, Indiana!
I thought Lancer is made in America.
Somebody PLEASE tell me why I cannot find a decent couch that is only about 24 inches deep– from back of sofa to knee bend. ALL THERE IS is 30+ inch or mostly “LUXE” which is 37 inches deep. Anybody else feel stupid and humiliated by having your legs stick straight out ? No way to bend your knees– forget leaning back. This is a complaint from everyone I know! NOBODY I know is 8 feet tall. WE are all sick of choosing between not leaning back or not bending our knees. I will not buy American made couches— the designers are a bunch of cruel people who refuse to make us a comfortable couch!
I wonder if they are made deeper because they are more comfortable to lay on?
CR Lane out of North Carolina has several Sofas that have a smaller depth for smaller frame folks that like to sit straight without pillows behind them and feet that touch the floor. Beautiful sofas.
Stickley Fine Upholstery is made in America (Syracuse, NY, I think) and lets you design a sofa in their Selectionals series and specify the depth. I ordered the 500 series with 20.5 inch depth but they have others from 20-24″ which is the max seat depth for sitting comfort, IMO.
Mayo Furniture Has been made in Texarkana, Texas since 1965. We are almost entirely sourced from U.S. vendors. We are third generation and family owned.
. Leaunen Sofa Factory made in Tucson, AZ. You can walk into the factory and pick and choose your sofa and fabric made to order.. modern designs too! Custom sofa with bed for 650$
In my scouting about for American-made sofas, I came across Roger + Chris. I believe they are strictly an online/call and place order business. Their sofas are in the mid to high range in price but impeccably styled and well-constructed. Sofas are manufactured in their Hickory, N.C. factory. Additionally, their website offers a virtual education on sofa construction, cleaning tips and other useful knowledge dispensed to educate the buyer.
